About The Kentucky Coal Association
Headquartered in Lexington, KCA is the state's leading coal association with members representing both Eastern and Western Kentucky, surface and underground production, and union and non-union operations. This diversity helps the association build a consensus approach in problem solving and dealing with the complex issues facing the industry today.
KCA traces its origin to a statewide association of coal operators who united their efforts in 1942. KCA's constitution and by-laws were adopted on April 28, 1947, "to promote the best interest of the coal mining industry in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and all those engaged therein..."
That commitment has never waivered, and has grown stronger in the intervening years through the efforts of coal industry leaders who have served the Commonwealth in a variety of ways in the past half century.
KCA is registered as a 501(c)6 non-profit organization. It's by-laws, revised in 1991, call for two classes of members:
Individual Members - Any corporation, firm or individual directly engaged in producing and/or processing coal in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is eligible for individual membership. Each company holds at least one seat on the board of directors, with additional seats proportioned according to the tonnage produced in the state.
Associate Members - Any other association, organization, corporation, firm or individual interested in promoting the welfare of the coal industry in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is eligible for associate membership. A proportional number of Associate Members serve on the board of directors as nominated by the associates and elected by the Individual Members.
KCA publishes a directory of associate member companies each year containing a full listing of services, supplies, and equipment available through each firm or company.
